Kalambatritra Special Reserve *

Located in the southeast some 50 km east of Betroka, the very important Kalambatritra Special Reserve nevertheless remains poorly known. Access by car is difficult between Ihosy and Betroka, and very difficult between Betroka and the reserve. There are no accommodations available either in the reserve itself or nearby. However, this forest includes vegetation from both the Eastern Domain and the Southern Domain, and is the only site currently known for the recently-described Wright’s sportive lemur (Lepilemur wrightae), one of the most distinctive members of the genus. Other lemurs occurring there include southern bamboo lemur (Hapalemur meridionalis), ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta), red-collared brown lemur (Eulemur collaris), and aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis).
