Mangerivola Special Reserve

Located in central-eastern Madagascar, about 50 km from Toamasina (= Tamatave), this special reserve covers some 13,000 ha. It is accessible only by foot, and has no accommodations nearby. Species that may be seen here include the brown lemur (Eulemur fulvus), the red-bellied lemur (Eulemur rubriventer), eastern woolly lemur (Avahi laniger), the diademed sifaka (Propithecus diadema), and indri (Indri indri). Sightings of the greater dwarf lemur (Cheirogaleus major) and the gray bamboo lemur (Hapalemur griseus griseus) are possible as well. As is the case for a number of other remote eastern rain forest reserves, we do not recommend this one for a first-time visitor to the country.
