Nosy Komba and Nosy Tanikely ***

The small island of Nosy Komba, near Nosy Be in northwestern Madagascar, is a good place to see the black lemur (Eulemur macaco). The island consists mainly of secondary forest and scrub, but several groups of very habituated black lemurs come every day to a feeding site where tourists can offer them bananas sold by local villagers. Day tours are available from most of the hotels on Nosy Be. There are two small but excellent lodges on the wooded side of the island, the Jardin Vanille and the Tsara Komba, where visitors can spend the night. Semi-wild black lemur populations can also be seen around these lodges. The small island of Nosy Tanikely, a short distance from Nosy Komba and part of the Nosy Be tourist circuit, has an introduced population of the black lemur (Eulemur macaco). It is not worth a special visit for the lemurs, since they are much better seen in Lokobe or Nosy Komba. However, if one happens to be on this island for diving, the principal attraction, a short walk up the hill will usually provide some lemur sightings.
